Event Description

A human rights-based approach to mental health centers dignity, equity, and participation. Community support and belonging are essential to making those rights real in daily life. This Mental Illness Awareness Week event explores the vital roles of community networks and resources in providing care outside of traditional clinical systems. Dr. Vikram Patel, Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a leading expert on community-based approaches to mental health, will deliver the keynote lecture, “A Rights-Based Approach to Mental Health Care.” His talk will be followed by a live panel discussion with a peer support specialist, psychiatrist, and community activists, highlighting how connection and belonging foster recovery and prevention. Local organizations will share information about their efforts to enhance community and mental health starting at 6:30 PM and again after the program.
